Street Tree Planting

The street trees in Somerville are planted by either OSPCD or the Department of Public Works (DPW), depending on their location. Certain areas in the city receive designated monies from federal Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds. OSPCD manages these areas, and trees located in all other areas are managed by DPW. See the CDBG Street Trees Map on the right to determine who plants the trees near you. For tree information on street trees outside of CDBG locations and for all tree removal and maintenance information, contact the Department of Public Works (under Departments, above).

OSPCD Street Tree Program

With annual CDBG funding of roughly $75,000, OSPCD contracts out for bid the planting of trees throughout the CDBG areas of the city. These trees have a three year warranty.

OSPCD can add trees where they are requested, where they would be supplementing tree-deficient areas, and where the OSPCD determines that additional trees would benefit the city.

Street Tree Requests

  • To request a tree in your area, call 311 to make an order. Depending on the location of the proposed tree, the request will either pass to OSPCD or DPW.
  • Only property owners can request trees directly in front of their property.
